This Type II-B, $7.9 million, 16,200 s.f. library, with a pre-action sprinkler and fire alarm system, located in the City of Pico Rivera, is to be operated jointly with the County of Los Angeles. Adding to the already ample interior space are 4 separate furnished and landscaped courtyards, accessible to library staff and users, which , together, add another 2,700 s.f. These courtyards have different solar orientations and shading strategies, allowing them to be used as summer / winter courtyards, morning / afternoon environments, or as adult / children spaces. Sliding bifold doors allow adjacent indoor spaces to open up to the courtyards: the Meeting Room opens to the Entry Courtyard, the Family space opens to the Children’s courtyard, and the Adult / Teen reading areas open to the Adult Courtyard. The building features several complex building systems including: exterior sunshades and fins which shade exposed glass; a radiometer-based motorized shade system which calculates heat load of all window surfaces, controlling solar heat gain into the interior space; extensive daylight harvesting, dimming nearly every light fixture type when sufficient natural light is available; a high percentage of recycled content in the building materials used; a large percentage of permeable and pervious hardscape; and drought tolerant and native landscaping. In 2015, the project was awarded LEED Platinum certification, making it the second of only three LA County Library LEED Platinum buildings. The East Rancho Dominguez Library is the first.
